Climbing Contrasts

On Friday, Porthmadog was the hottest place in the UK at 20°C. I ran up the Watkin path to Bwlch Ciliau in a t-shirt and shorts at 19:00 and was still too hot.

On Saturday morning, I awoke to snow on the tops! I hit the first of it at 450m, and it was bitter in the blustery gusts on the Carneddau.

I looped from Glen Dena up the east ridge of Pen yr Ole Wen, along Ysgolion Duon and the down to the narrow ridge of Bwlch Eryl Farchog. The descent of Penywaun-wen was the most carefree flat-out snowy freefall that I’ve had this winter; brilliant.

It’s been a while since I’ve run on paths which aren’t nicely manicured, and so the off-piste bits of this route were really enjoyable.

Things were topped off nicely with a trip to the cinema with Gareth and Jono, and my first trip to the new(ish) Beacon wall in Caernarfon on Sunday. That’s right, the weather was so appalling that we didn’t even bother trying to go anywhere outdoors!
