Gareth and I went drifting a couple of weeks ago, with mixed results.

I’ll admit I was more than a little nervous, having only ever done a wheelspin once, in someone else’s hire car (you know who you are), about fifteen years ago. I suppose the MX-5 did get a bit feisty and sideways a couple of times, but nothing serious. However, it turns out that doughnuts are easy. Figures of eight are a bit more difficult, and anything more advanced is horribly complicated.

It was quite interesting to deliberately thrash the life out of something, although it wasn’t anywhere near as finessed as I’d imagined. In fairness though, we weren’t talking about this kind of accuracy. With some more instruction I’m sure you could pick it up quite quickly, but I think I enjoyed the track day at Oulton Park more (probably because I was a bit better at it – I get grumpy when I can’t do things). Great fun to play around in a risk-free environment though, especially for someone as risk-averse as me!
